In the last chapter of his life, in Auvers-sûr-Oise near Paris, Van Gogh painted 'Thatched Cottages at Cordeville’.
To his sister Willemien, he wrote: “Here there are roofs of mossy thatch which are superb, and of which I’ll certainly do something.”
Van Gogh left the South of France to be closer to his brother. Having visited Theo and his wife in Paris for a few days, he was glad to leave the city and move to the countryside again. He was happy there and the romantic scene with cottages may depict this happiness.
The original painting can be visited, among many other of Van Gogh’s masterpieces, in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
